Busy Day Off...

Well today was the 1st day of my 4 day weekend and boy was it a full one.  Started off waking up around 7 UGH didn't even get to sleep in.  I didn't have to get up that early just woke up and couldn't go back to sleep so I grabbed my iPad and of course went to Facebook LOL.  My 1st appointment was at 11am in Chattanooga then it was back to Cleveland for a 12:30 massage with Ms Katie at All About U Salon.  I had a few minutes in between appointment so I ran into Big Lots and pick up some snack foods and my pups a new toy & goodies too.  After my massage had lunch with my mom & g'ma at the local Cracker Barrel.  Then off to get mom some keys made for her new home.  Mom had to take g'ma to the doc so I went on over to the new house and started doing some things for my mom.  Took down a crazy bifold door that was between the living & kitchen.  OMG it must have had 50 screws in it and they were all slotted screws and I forgot the attachment for my power screwdriver so I had to take them out by hand. UGH But I got the job done!  Then I started painting again. My hubby had to work late so I came home and made some dinner for me and mom, gave the dogs a dingo and started laundry.  A very productive day for me indeed.

Tomorrow.... MOVING SALE TIME! I hope we sell a ton of stuff cuz we sure have it ...LOL

Until next time.... Have a great weekend!

Woohooo...It's the Weekend!!

Well... it's the weekend again for me.  Four lovely days off from scraping teeth aaahhhhh.  I love my career but it's hard on this old body of mine not to mention I've been helping my mom after work painting and things at her new home.  It's all good though. Great company and lots of laughs. My mom and her sisters...what a group of ladies. LOL Gotta love them :-)

My plans for my 4 days off are as follows...

Friday

  1. Appointment in Chatt
  2. A well deserved massage by my good friend Katie at All About U Salon
  3. Help mom figure out her kitchen cabinets
  4. Dinner with my hubby
Saturday
  1. Try to sell...sell...sell at mom's yard sell
  2. Spend the afternoon with my honey :-)
  3. Hamburger night!!
Sunday - Movie Day!  White House Down is on our agenda

Monday - Probably something for mom I'm sure LOL

Hope you have a great weekend planned

Until next time....

Keep Brushing!!!

Where's This Day Headed...

Yesterday at the office was a bust patient wise.  Not sure where they all went too the day started out booked and swiftly they started falling like flies.   Well...not to worry it gave me a chance to call and reschedule my patients durning the times I had scheduled to go to a hygiene convention in Vegas and my upcoming vacation to the Mediterranean.  OMG...I can't hardly wait for both of them.  I've never been to either place and I'm getting more and more excited each day.  Ok back to my day... So I got all that done along with some other paperwork type stuff saw my 4pm patient and was out the door.  Ran home took my pups out and threw a pizza in the oven for dinner for me and the hubs.  Then it was off to my mom's new house to help with some painting. Of cours me being the youngest, which believe me isn't saying much since I'm...well.Okshall we say had 2 quarter-life crisis and then some, got to paint the base boards....thanks mom...hehehe.   I was smart though and pre-medicated myself with aleve.  That'll show those sore muscles who's boss.   Actually wasn't too sore this moring either :)  All in all a productive day even if I only was 2 patients LOL

Until next time....keep smiling :D

Oh my aching....

Well... I wished I could say just one thing was aching but it's pretty much all of me tonight.  I didn't even have that difficult of a hygiene day either.  I tell ya the 50's aren't for wimps.  Every joint I have is letting me know it's there.  I suppose I'll have to start living on aleve now :(   Anyone who dares say that a hygienist doesn't earn her paycheck might get an earful from me if I hear it.  Dental hygiene is really hard on the body. Leaning over someone all day long trying to see what your doing while treating a person whose tongue is in your way and your chasing it down trying to keep it out of harms way all the while trying to suction the spit out so you can see.  It's treacherous work to say the least.

Well... That's all I can say about that tonight I'm too tired to type LOL

Another Monday's Coming 'Round

Well... This weekend sure flew by :(  I think there ought to be a minimum 3 days to every weekend.  I only work 4 days a week but still get stuck with 2 day weekends twice a month. I really shouldn't complain I've got a great work schedule really. 8am to 5pm with no Saturdays or Sundays ever and 4 day weekends every other week.  I mean that's pretty darn good if ya ask me :D

Anyway...it's off to work for me in the am.  Hops you all have a great week!!!!

Until tomorrow .... Cya :)

Saturday is Done :(

Well this weekend is flying by.  Saturday is over.  Spent the day with my honey bunny.  Went to the movies and saw Brad Pitt in World War Z.  A pretty intense movie and overall I enjoyed it.  I've never been much of a Brad Pitt fan but he was pretty good in this film.  The zombies in this movie sure aren't like the ones in Walking Dead though...LOL  These are some fast moving suckers, not the slow shuffling ones that you can walk up too and bash their brains in...hehehehe

Well...that's all I have to say today LOL

Have a great Sunday :-)

Friday, June 21, 2013

Oh how I love the weekends :-)

That's how I felt today... hehehe Although Friday at the office didn't turn out as bad as I thought it was gonna be. All in all a good day.  All the patients showed up which is great. I turned an emergency patient into a new patient with my wit and charm plus I actually got to wolf down some easy mac & cheese around lunch time between patients.  Don't get me wrong most days I love what I do and my patients. Most of them are really good folks but dental hygiene is really hard on the old back and neck for us RDHs.  How any hygienists works 40+ hours a week I'll never know.  I can barely do the 30-32 that I'm scheduled.

Anywhoooo... after a long week it's finally 3pm Friday and I decided to go tan. Yes, I know, I know it's really bad for ya but I just hate looking all pale and trust me I'm not addicted to it like "tan mom"  I may go 1 or 2 times a week if I'm lucky.  Then home to take my pups out and wait for the hubs to get home from work.  Then we're out for date night for our pizza at Antonio's.  They know us when we come in cuz we are there most every Friday and the seasoned waitresses know our order too... 2 diet cokes, 1 side salad no dressing and a medium cheese pizza crispy.  Well, tonight our waitress got the size of the pizza wrong but no worries, we didn't gripe her out we just ate and and teased her how she saved us some calories.  It's all good :-)

Tomorrow's movie --- World War Z with Brad Pitt
Never was much of a Brad Pitt fan but I like a good zombie movie so I'll get it a whirl...hehehehe

Is the weekend here yet?

I really hate to wish the week away but OMG this has been a doozy of a work week and I still have one more day to go!  Saturday can't get here fast enough for me.  I can't wait to be sitting next to my honey at the theater enjoying our nacho and cheese together and watching World War Z.  That's our thing on Saturday...movies, nachos, cheese, popcorn coke zero and a tootsie pop LOL.  Then it's off to Wally's for groceries and such.  I know it sounds boring but it's how we roll on the weekend.

Lost Toothbrushes

Ok is it just me or has everyone forgotten what end of the toothbrush to insert in their mouths????

I'm serious!  I'm a dental hygienist by trade and honestly I have had a rash of patients that have mouths full of plaque and food debris.  I am freaking worn out and have only worked 2 days this week by the end of Friday they will have to carry me out on a stretcher at this rate. LOL.  Seriously I care for my clients and try to do a good job but help a sister out please brush your teeth DAILY and THROUGHLY.  I don't even harp on flossing any more after 20 years. I know you're not going to do it so why bother but please brush.   :-)

Until next time ....  Keep Brushing

I am Woman...I am Strong...I am So Tired

I don't know what's up with me about after 8 hours of dental hygiene I worn slap out.  The thing is I didn't even have a very heavy day of patients and non of them where overly difficult to deal with but I'm just pooped.  I think some of it is our weather lately.  Rain, rain and more freaking rain.  Highly unusual for my area. Usually it's so hot and dry we are begging for rain but NOOOOOO rain pouring rain. I feel like I've move to the northwest. My arms feel like they have lifted like 1000 pounds.

My neck feels like someone has tried to twist it out of my and my shoulders have been beat with a ball bat.  I guess I'm just getting old. Getting old sucks.  This is only my first day back to work this week and I already feel like I've put in my 4 days UGH.  I need a new career...NO I need to win the lottery LOL  Yep that's it!  Cuz I'm sure not going to inherit any money..hehehehe I guess the pain just lets me know I'm alive.  I guess that's the positive way to look at it.  Well...I'm going to chillax for a while.  Have a great evening!

Until next time.... Sherri

Non Productive Day

Well, to day was a very unproductive day.  No worries though didn't really have anything much that I absolutely had to do anyway.  So what if I slept till 10am then just went and plopped on the couch...hehehe  I was going to do something but then my equilibrium went bonkers and I could do much other than sit there starring at the TV :/  I did make an effort to put up the laundry and that made me nauseous but I got through it and sat back down after I found some motion sickness meds and took those. So there's nothing much to write about other than I'm still in my "loungewear" starring at the TV and playing on the laptop.

Until tomorrow.... Sherri

30 Days & Counting!

Only 30 more days and I'll be winging my way to Las Vegas to a dental hygiene convention.  This convention is better known as RDH UOR which means Registered Dental Hygienists Under One Roof.  It's put on by Pennwell Publishers who publish a lot of dental related magazines one of which is call RDH.  I've been reading RDH magazine since before I became a hygienist over 20 years ago.  It's a great mag for hygienists written mostly by hygienists.  I personally know several of their regular columnists.  You can get some great information from this magazine but the convention is the "bomb" as my brother use to say. There is usually well over 1000 RDHs at this convention.  It's a great place to meet up with old friends and make a lot of new ones. This will be my forth RDH UOR convention and my first time to Vegas.  It's gonna be a fun time and I can't wait to see some of my old friends that I've connected with via an email group that my friend Amy started about 15 years ago. If you want to join her email group "The Listers" just click here :-)  I have learned so much by being connected to this group over the years and it's really helped me keep my dental hygiene life alive.  Sometimes in hygiene you can feel isolated and lonely especially if you're the only hygienist at your office which I am not but....I digress.

This group of ladies and gents have proven to be one of the most knowledgable groups of people I have ever met. I have learned so much from them over the years.  They have kept me on the cutting edge of dental hygiene by keeping me informed of new technologies and products.  They have supported me though some tough times in my life like the death of my dad, brother and other family members. Listen to me gripe and complain about work or family issues. They have always been there for me especially my good friend Amy.  Thanks for always being there and listening to me.  You hold a very special place in my heart and life.  I'm so glad that we ran into each other via the internet.

Dental hygiene is my...well, it's my life, my passion, my livelihood. For the most part I love what I do and my patients. It's been a great career. Don't get me wrong if I hit the lottery I'm giving it up and traveling :)

Until next time....

Today's Blog

Well, today mom had her big sale but unfortunately so did everyone else in town. We had a few rushing of customers but nothing liked we had hoped :(
I think mom did ok for a days work but you couldn't notice anything much missing from all the stuff she needs to eliminate before the move.  She bid on a house and I hope she gets this one because I think it's a really good deal. Now it's just the wait and see phase.

I don't understand people when they come to yard sales.  I have a ton of practically new books and was asking hardly anything for them and no one would even bite but they will go to the local used book store and by 2 or 3 times what I was asking for the same stupid books.  I don't get that at all.  Same thing with games/gaming systems they'll go buy a used one at these same places and pay 2x what I was asking for a lot less and it's usually be abused to death. Mine are in nearly new condition with original boxes UGH Anywhoooo... seems I can't sell crap LOL

Until tomorrow... Have a great night

Weekend Wonderings

Today I was off from work YEAAAAAA!!  So I went and got a much needed massage from Ms Katie over at the All About U Salon.  It was oooh sooo good too. Working in dentistry is not so good for the back and neck. Boy, I get kinks where you wouldn't think you'd get kinks.  So I go have Katie unknot me. I asked her if it would break up my cellulite and she just laughed at me, so I took that as a big fat NO. LOL Oh and that is not me in that picture...hehehe

Then ran over to Big Lots to peruse all the goodies they get in.  You never know what you'll find good in that store :-)  Then lunch with my ladies, my mom & g'ma.  My of 2 best buds in all the world!  Mom sold her house and she's been scouring Cleveland for a replacement that won't brake the bank and I think we found one.  Nice little brick ranch about 6 minutes from me.  Which will be nice.  I hope the guy takes her bid on it. Say I word of prayer for her.

Tomorrow we have our HUGE yard sale and I have tons of books and video games and VHS tapes if you still watch those...hehehe We've got furniture and brick a brack, knick knacks, clothing, air compressor, pressure washer, TVs, & tons of other stuff. I think my mom is selling everything but the kitchen sink...hehe So if you live in Cleveland, TN look for a huge yard sale.

Well...Until tomorrow

Hope you have a great weekend!

It's My Friday

It's my Friday and I'll sing if I want to....sing if I want to...sing if I want to.  You would sing too if it was your Friday too :)

Anyway it's my 4 day weekend WOOHOO.  Tomorrow is a massage at All About  U Salon with Ms Katie Huff.  If you need a good massage and you live in Cleveland, TN then look her up!  Then I guess I'll come back home and collect up with I'm taking to my mom's HUGE yard sale Saturday. Then it's out for pizza on date night :-)  I'll spend most of Saturday with mom & the sale with her helping out.  My niece and a friend will be there also so stop on by and bring some cash cuz we got TONS of stuff!  Then Sunday I'll spend with my honey going to the movies to see Superman. Just the usual weekend stuff.  Gezzz maybe I'm reviling too much LOL.  When all that news broke about the government watching us and going though our phones I was like... let'em watch me I am the most boring human on the planet.  If they have nothing better to do go ahead waste your time and my tax dollars watching me.  Morons!

Anywhooo, hope you have a great weekend.  The government won't have to spend my tax dollars I'll just tell them what I'm doing... LOL

Shut up and Drive!

Ok...ready for today's rant?  Well, here goes.  What is up with all the bad drivers on the road?  OMG  Either they drive way too fast or way too slow and it's usually the latter around this town.  I don't think I'm asking too much for people to JUST drive the posted speed limit.  I mean come on.  The route I take home is through town and I know you can't or shouldn't drive 55mph but at least do the 35 or 40 that is posted NOT freaking 20mph!  I didn't think I was ever gonna make it home tonight and I only live 9 miles from my office.  First the guy in the old black toyota truck was driving like 25mph in a 35mph then when we get to the crossroad where there is a traffic like the guy turns his directional on to turn right and what does he do...turns left and VERY slowly at that!  It's a double turn lane and there is no one in the other lane so I hit the gas and pass his slow butt.  I make my move then turn down the next street things are moving along nicely now then I get behind a guy in an SUV on his stupid cell phone who is going 25mph in a 40mph.  UGH and on this road there is NO place to pass him.  So I bide my time creeping along like a snail.  Traffic is backing up behind me because he's too busy yacking to drive.
Listen, I've been around a long time WAY before cell phones came along and I know from experience that you DO NOT need your ear to a phone 24/7.  People! before cell phones we just waited until we got home to make a call and I'm sure you could do the same now.  Don't you realized that a big percentage of traffic accidents are because you are not paying attention to what you are doing...distracted driving!  I want to make it home in one piece not be involve in your stupidity.  Then there are the jerks that don't know how to use a directional (signal light).  They don't use them or when they do they indicate they are going right and go left or vice versa.  I have to confess I don't always use mine but there it's when there is no one around so why bother.  Maybe that a bad habit but it's how I roll...LOL

I did make it home once again unscathed which is a miracle in it's self in this town.

Hope your drive home today was uneventful.

Catching Up with New Dental Technology

Ok... As you can tell by some of my posts I work in the dental field.  I've been a dental hygienist for 20 years now.  I consider myself a good hygienist.  I'm not the best but I'm not the worst not by any stretch of the imagination.  I take way more continuing education than is necessary to keep my license current. I try to stay up to date on new techniques and technologies and if it were up to me and I ran my own business I would have more of these things. But alas that's not how it works in the dental game.  Hygienists are still under the guise of the dentist so therefore we work for/with them.  Fortunately, I work with a dentist who likes to stay on the cutting edge with his education & technologies as much as he can afford too. Dang it if dental equipment weren't so darn expensive!  Well, anyway...he likes to get new things when possible and can be fit in our budget.
He recently purchased the lastest Cerec machine which will allow the dentists in my practice to fit a crown for our patients in 1 visit and save them from coming back and missing possibly more work.  It's a pretty cool machine too.  We're also adding a new oral cancer screening tool to our practice called Oral-ID.  Oral cancer is on the rise and  there have been many screening tools that have come to the market over the last few years.  Some require the patient to rinse with this horrid tasting solution and a little disposable light wand is use to look in the mouth.  Then there is the Velscope & Identifi which uses fluorescing technology but they are pricey.  The Oral-ID uses the same technology but is smaller and less expensive to use. Therefore it's less expensive to the patient for their
screening :-)  It's a win, win for everyone around. We have better screening tools beside just our naked eyes and patients doen't have to pay an arm & a leg for their cancer screenings!  Looks like a flashlight doesn't it.  Pretty cool! Can't wait to start screening my patients and offering them a little more peace of mind.  With all the media goings on about Michael Douglas' oral cancer and HPV.  This little handheld device will help dental professionals give better care to their patients.

Does your dentist or doctor use an oral cancer screening aid?  If not, let them know that there is an affordable way to provide this service to their patients.

Monday, Monday...

Monday, Monday...
Most people don't like Mondays. I'm kind of indifferent to them.  I don't have to work every Monday so that's good :D But today was my Monday to work at the office. So there I was at 7:45 this morning for our usual morning meeting before starting our day.  It was good Monday though, great patients and good company from my fellow co-workers.  Their a bunch of great ladies and I'm glad to call them all my friends.

Not sure how you feel about Mondays, but if you really think about them they really aren't all that bad especially if you wake up.  Now if you don't wake up then you've got a problem.

On another note...

Dang, do you know how many songs there are about Mondays???  A lot!

Sunday Funday!

Well, it's Sunday and I usually go out to my mom's for lunch and some good conversations.  Today was one of those days :)  My mom and I have always been pretty close. Even though like most mothers she gets under your skin, she's always been there for me and loves me no matter what.  She also gives pretty good advice.  She's not the type to pry in your business too much but if you ask her she'll let you know how she feels about things and sometimes when you don't ask. LOL Now that I look back on my life there are times I wish she would have butted in a little more. Maybe I wouldn't have married that jerk! LOL  No, I don't blame anyone but my own stupid 23 year old self for making that mistake.  UGH and what a big one it was.  That's 5 years of my life I wouldn't want to relive.  My hubby now is an awesome, caring person who is always there for me.  Girls... let me give you this little piece of advice when picking a man.  Watch how he treats his mother or how he refers to his mother in conversations. However he treats his mom is how he's going to treat you.  It's a very good gage trust me.

Mom and I sat around and chatted about life and her soon to be move.  She's trying to consolidate things for her and my g'ma. They'll be co-habituating after the move. So I put her an ad on Craigslist and took pics of a bunch of her stuff to post on Facebook too. I hope she has a HUGE turn out this Saturday too.

Hope your alls Sunday was a great one.  Monday here we come!

My Pup Kassie

Kassie 10-12 Weeks Old

My pup Kassie has some real issues...LOL  We rescued her from one of the local shelters, McKamey Animal Center,  almost 11 years ago. She was a tiny little thing that stole our hearts with 4 white paws and tail tipped in white too. Playful and bouncy and a fast learner too.  We had her house trained in a few weeks.  She learned to stay in the hall bathroom while we were working and wasn't too destructive, unlike her adopted sister Katie. I'll get to her later. Kassie will be 11 this September and while she's a great dog, never messes in the house, never chews up stuff & such, she's got issues.  She can be a bit finicky about her treats.
Kassie's Favorite Position
She will not let you trim her nails and giving her any type of medication is a real ordeal. Changing her flea collar too can be a chore. She just doesn't like to be bothered.   Then their is the "cha ching" issue, yes, cha ching.  If she hears the sound of a cash register she absolutely just is scared and runs to you in a shaking fit. Shivering like you wouldn't believe.  I don't know why she does this but we have a commercial from a local business that uses this sound effect and if I don't mute the TV she has her little fit.  We noticed it when my husband would do his check book on the computer. Every time he made an entry there was the "chi ching" sound effect and Kassie would just go in to this shivering fit. Darnest thing I've ever seen... LOL

Kassie Rolling
She also doesn't like when my husband works in his daily planner or he works in the kitchen. Not sure where those issues come from but she's run in the laundry room and hide by the back door...hehehe Craziest thing I've ever seen. Kassie loves to roll on her back and her favorite treats are green peppers, vanilla ice cream, & Dingo bones.

I'm Just A Lazy Pup
One of Kassie's Favorite Spots
This is Kassie now. A lazy spoiled rotten lab mixed cuddle bug.

Woohoo it's Friday!

It's Friday, it's Friday!  Can you tell I'm happy cuz it's the weekend ;)  Today was my Friday to work and it was an uneventful day at the office, no mishaps and every patient showed up WOOOHOO!  In dentistry you always do the happy dance when all your scheduled patients showed up and your schedule is full but not OVER full.

After work I went and tanned.  Yes, I know it's not good for ya but I don't over do it.  I'm not addicted to it or anything like that I just have no where outside at home to layout plus I just don't have the time.  I just want a healthy glow so don't condem me.  Then home to take out my baby girls and wait on the hubs to get home from work.  It's pizza night for the Bushes then the mall & Target. That's our Friday routine. Boring I know, but it suits us and I like it.  I did a little Vegas #RDHUOR shopping and found pair of creamsicle pants & a cute JLo top at Kohls.

I think later me and the hubby will start a movie - Number Station with John Cusack.  Looks like it might be an interesting movie. A former black ops agent and the young woman he's assigned to protect fight for survival after a surprise attack.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

I Need a Freaking Vacation!

Ok, all in all it was a good day when you really think about it but for some reason I'm worn out  I think it's because my last patient just frustrated the crap out of me.  Not because he was a jerk or anything but because HELLO use a freaking toothbrush.  I could get graphic about it but I'll just leave it to your imaginations.
We also had a communication barrier which made it almost impossible to get the point across.  That didn't help much. Tried to explain that he had bad teeth that needed addressed but all he wanted was something to numb the pain.  Tried to tell him that I can numb it up for ya but it's just gonna become un-numb in about an hour and start hurting again.  I had the doctor talk to him but still this guy just didn't get the fact that he had diseased teeth that needed attention.

Then my poor niece's car get wrecked by her BF rear ending someone.  And while I know she's upset (I would be too) they are both ok, no one was hurt except the vehicles.  So in the grand scheme of things it's all good. Not sure how she's going to replace her wheels though :/

My poor mom is dealing with selling her house and consolidating her belongings and my g'ma's. Which is a big under taking because my g'ma is so stubborn that she thinks she shouldn't have to give up anything.  My mom says she it learning from this experience and will try to not do the same thing to me when she is 94.  Thanks mom :)

Anyway...I'm pooped and I'm going to bed.. THANK GOD TOMORROW IS FRIDAY is all I can say :)

Hump Day!

Well, it's hump day and I busted my hump at the office today but it's all good :-)   Busy day at the office again for me which is great.  I like busy but not so busy I can't take a potty break ;)  Pretty uneventful on my side of the office. Had a group of great patients today. We talked and laughed all day.

My boss's birthday is this weekend and boy do we have a gag gift for him this time...LOL  Good thing he has a sense of humor.  Well, how shall I put this...a "strange" person told him that he should have gotten his dental degree from Wal-Mart. There is more to that story but I'll leave it at that for right now.  So anyway we took that incident and ran with it.  I made up a certificate that states University of Wal-Mart School of Dentistry on it with my docs name on it etc. and then found a Dentistry for Dummies book cover printed them out.  Then pasted the cover on to an old "dummies" book my hubby had and tada! Gag gift of the year...hehehe I can't wait to see his face!!  It's gonna be classic!!  Hope he comes to work in a good mood tomorrow...LOL

I'll let ya know how it turns out ;)

It's Tuesday but I Call It My Monday :/

Well, today was my Monday at the office.  Started off with our monthly office meeting which all in all went pretty good as far as office meetings go.  I really have to say my office is a pretty good place to work most days. The dentists are accommodating and let us dental hygienists use our brains that the good Lord gave us.  I work with 2 dentists and I've been at this office for nearly 16 years now.  I had a full schedule and all the patients showed up YEAHHHH. I have some really great patients that are like my extended family especially the kids that I've watch grow into young men and women who are now going off to or graduating from college.  Since I don't have any children of my own they are like my kids and many of them tell me "you sound just like my mom" when I try to give them advice :-)  I have laughed, cried and sent out too many sympathy cards over the years.  Dental hygiene has been good to me over the last 20 years and I hope to continue giving good care to the folks in my community.

Oh... and I found out today that you can get your dental degree from Wal-Mart LOL... That's a story for another day....hehehehe

Today Was a Good Day

Today was a good day :-)

Nothing much too exciting happened.  Didn't have to work, that's always a plus, woke up at 8:15 laid around until 9ish then decided time to get up. Ate my usual yogurt breakfast then coffee #1.  My 2 lazy dogs didn't even greet me when I walked into the kitchen.  I never seen too lazier pups..LOL.  Watched a little TV, well, actually a lot of TV...hehehe.  Drank coffee #2.  Lunch time!
a bowl of steamed broccoli and sweet tea for this southern girl while sitting on the porch watching Rachel Ray and the Talk with my girls.  Then chatted with my mom on the phone and decided to run to Wal-Mart for a few things for supper and just some general crap.  I always spend too much when I go there. :/

Got back from my shopping trip to find a small box at my back door and in it was the American Eagle XP instrument that I won for being #460 to like the Career Fusion Facebook page.  Gotta love contests!  Thank AE!!! Love XP instruments and if you're an RDH and haven't tried them yet, you just don't know what you're missing, buy some NOW!

Then I started dinner which was parmesan penna pasta with chicken.  It was oooooohhh so yummy too.  Had enough left over for lunch tomorrow too.

Now it's time to do some working out, about 30 minutes worth which will consist of hula hooping, weights and stuff.  Then more TV!!!  Catch ya later!

Tiring but Good :-)

Today I had the opportunity to help my community.  I live in a city just north of
Chattanooga, Cleveland, TN.  While I'm not originally from the area I have lived here for nearly 17 years.  As you can tell from my previous posts, I am in the business of dental hygiene.  Well, the Remote Area Medical came to our area today to do dental, medical and vision care for those in need and some of us from my office volunteered to help.  What an experience this was for me.  I've done other volunteer work though my office (I'll tell you about that later) but this was really cool just to see how the pull this off in the cafeteria of a high school.  They have rows of mobile dental units lined up, I think there were about 40+ chairs. I was at chair 34.  They do free cleanings, filling, & extractions.  They use a mobile x-ray unit called Nomad to take x-rays on the go.  Everything is sterilized just like in an dental office by autoclave.  They have rows and rows of dental instruments and equipment.  It's like a well oiled machine.  I was honored to get to help out.  The downside is you have to stand up to do your treatment which is hard on these 50+ year old legs and back but it was worth it to see the smiles on the faces of those I got to give care too. I had one 12 year old girl who just kept laughing at my crazy jokes and she looks up and "says you are just too funny".  Made me feel great that she was at ease with me.  Then I had the shall we call him the "character" what a hoot he was to treat.  Well, I suppose it takes all kinds.

All in all it was an awesome Sunday morning.  If your interesting in volunteering for RAM check out their website at www.ramusa.org  to see if they are coming to your area or if you want to travel that's cool too.  We had volunteers from many states at our clinic. I met one male RDH from FL and another volunteer who was a nursing student from CO.  So you don't have to stay close to home if you don't want. Make it a vacation with a purpose!

The Dreaded "F" Word

I'm sure most of you hate going to the dentist.  I hear it every day from my own patients. But be honest it's not all that bad. Dentistry and dental hygiene have come a long way over the years I have to admit myself.  In the 25 years that I've been in dentistry, 5 as a dental assistant and the last 20 as a Registered Dental Hygienists, I my self have seen plenty of changes. Some for the better and some not so good.  The good stuff is the technological advances that I've seen such as DNA testing for periodontal disease, digital radiology, advances in oral cancer detection & decay control just to name a few. I will address some of these new technologies in future blogs. But today I want to talk about the old FLOSS.

I know, I know you don't wanna hear the "F" word from your hygienist.  Well, I think you're going to be surprised about my feeling as a hygienist about floss.  I think floss is crap. Most people don't use it properly anyway so why bother. Plus no one wants to use it a for one thing anyway, not even me.  Yes, you heard me right. I hate to floss! I didn't say I didn't clean in between my teeth.  No you didn't hear or read that.  I said I hate to use floss. I tell my patients that I think it's because I floss their teeth.  I figured it up one time and I floss over 32,000 teeth a year.  That's a lot of flossing!! So I'm adding mind to that number...hehehe Besides there are many other means of cleaning between your teeth than just using string. I say most people are "allergic to string" anyway...LOL

Let's talk about some of my favorite floss alternatives.

Proxabrushes  or Interdental Brush
There are a myriad of different proxabrushes now. Every shape and size is available.  Gum makes some nice ones shown here.

Also Dentek makes a quality product and their prices seem to be a little more affordable.

I love their Easy Brushes.  They come in a variety of sizes in a bag of 16 and cost less than $4.00 at most department stores like Wal-Mart & Target.
Electric Flossers

Waterpik makes a cute little battery operated flosser. The tip of it is even coated with a whitening substance.  I've not tried the particular version but I've used an older model and it was ok.  Better than not cleaning in between your teeth at all anyway.  I always say "somethings better than nothing".

Oral-b has the Hummingbird flosser.  It's just regular floss and the handle vibrates. Not very inventive really.

Recently added to the flossing market is the Sonicare AirFloss.  I
purchased and AirFloss at a dental conference in 2011 when it first became available. I really like this device.  It works really well speaking from my own experience. I've even used it after I brushed and gotten lots of stuff out from between my teeth and I'm a great brusher if I do say so myself :)  The way this little gadget works is there is a reservoir on the handle that you fill with water. I like to put mouthwash in mine for a minty flavor ;) Then you place the tip between your teeth and press a button and it sends blast of liquid and air between your teeth and forces the plaque and debris out.

So you can see you don't have to use string to clean between your teeth anymore. There are plenty of other options and some of them much better than floss too.  I've only touched on a few examples there are many, many more.  All you have to do is search around and find what works for you. One size does NOT fit all. Keep trying things until the next time you see your hygienist she says... "What have you been using? Your oral care is so much better than last visit."  You'll be happy because your preventive care visit will go much better and you won't get the old flossing lecture from your hygienist.

Have a great day and happy interdental cleaning!!

Your Smiling RDH,
Sherri

Welcome

Well, I'm gonna give this blogging stuff a go.  Not too sure what I'll write about but since am a dental hygienist I suppose it'll most likely have to do with teeth and gums and crap like that most of the time. So bare with me while I cut my teeth (sorry about the pun) in the blogging word.
